Watercolour Nails

OPI GelColor Passion, OPI Hot & Spicy, OPI Dutch Tulips, OPI The "It" Color, China Glaze First Mate

While I'm rocking the gel mani, I wanted to attempt watercolour nails. I saw this on Chalkboard Nails  (and also followed Sarah's link to Rebecca Likes Nails and this video at BeautyGeeks) and really wanted to try it, but one of the necessities with this mani is a base that won't be cleaned off with nail polish remover, so you either need a super thick top coat, or a gel or shellac mani. I had tried it once with just a top coat and I failed miserably.

This time however, it was a bit more successful! Everyone else uses acetone to do the watercolour, but I used non-acetone remover, because I was slightly worried about ruining the gel. It still seemed to work how it was meant to. Since my gel mani is just kicking butt at looking perfect and not chipping, I figure I should keep it on a bit longer so I'm going to do this again! Probably in greens and purples.

  2. Beautiful manicure -

I have been admiring watercolor nails too but I am scared to mess up! Maybe I should get gel nails!

How difficult is it to do?

    1. Thanks Kelli! I've just done my blues & green version, and it hasn't turned out as 'watercoloury' as this mani did. Not sure if the colour choices were the best the second time around. The absolute best thing about doing it on a gel or shellac manicure is that if you make a mistake you can just wipe it off and start again!

  4. Looks great!

I tried this a few weeks ago over regular polish ( I didn't even think about it being an issue..der, I should have) and I had no issues at all and I didn't use any sort of top coat before doing the effect.

I have it up on my blog if you'd like to see http://iknowallthewords.blogspot.ca/2012/01/notd-cool-watercolours.html

    1. Wow! I can't believe that that was just over regular polish! Perhaps I'll have to give it another try after I take off the gel.

And, link away! Share the nail polish love!

  5. I'm doing this technique as we speak! I used WnW 2% Milk as my base. I'm just waiting for it to dry and then my watercolors are going to be some of the Milani Neons. :) Can't wait!

  6. PS, then depending on how vibrant the colors are, I may put another coat of 2% Milk on top because, I want it to be more subtle and 2% Milk is an awesome jelly for sandwiching. :D
